Using Your Own Printer with PheedLoop
PheedLoop offers fully configured, plug-and-play rental check-in kiosks for a seamless event experience. However, we understand that some clients prefer to use their own existing hardware for printing.
If you choose to Bring Your Own Printer (BYOP), please carefully review the following requirements and support policies.
⚠️ Risk Acceptance & Support Policy
By choosing to use your own printer, you are taking full responsibility for its setup, configuration, and maintenance.
- No Technical Assistance: PheedLoop will not provide pre-event or on-site technical support, troubleshooting, or configuration assistance for third-party hardware.
- No Guarantees: We cannot guarantee that outside hardware will function flawlessly with our software, as we cannot control the condition, firmware, or exact specifications of non-rental units. Even identical Zebra models may malfunction if configured incorrectly.
- Hardware Liability: PheedLoop is not responsible for any delays, print failures, or event disruptions caused by third-party printers.
If your team does not have a dedicated IT professional to manage server configurations and on-site hardware troubleshooting, we highly recommend utilizing PheedLoop’s rental fleet. Our dedicated support team fully configures, tests, and backs our rental kits to ensure your check-in process is entirely stress-free.
Hardware Compatibility Guidelines
Rather than providing a strict purchasing list, here is the exact configuration that works successfully with our internal fleet. If you are supplying your printer, you should ensure it matches these specifications:
- Printer Model: Zebra ZD621 (ZD6A142-D41L101EZ)
- Print Technology: Direct Thermal
- Resolution: 203 DPI
- Firmware: Link-OS 6.7+
- Sensor/Media Type: Black Mark
- Features: Cutter and Wi-Fi Attachment
- Badge Stock: All clients using their own printers must purchase their badge stock directly from PheedLoop to ensure media compatibility.
Connecting to the PheedLoop Server
PheedLoop printers do not just connect to the internet (see our separate Internet Requirements document for network guidelines). Zebra printers require a direct server connection to communicate with our check-in software.
Your IT team will need to send the following ZPL command to your printer to establish this connection:
! U1 setvar "weblink.ip.conn1.location" "https://print.pheedloop.com"
If your printer fails to connect after running this command, it may be due to the printer's internal clock being incorrect, which causes security certificates to fail. Your IT team will need to ensure the printer's date, time, and country code are accurately set.
Sending the Configuration Script
PheedLoop does not provide support or tutorials on how to interface with your specific printer. Your IT team can send the above script using their preferred method, such as Zebra Setup Utilities (ZSU), terminal commands, or via a virtual printer port. For instructions on how to send commands to your device, please refer to Zebra's Official Support Documentation.
